Behind The Wheel
Friday night at 7:30
I took her to the station
she was going down to Houston
to visit her relations
Well I stopped and bought some beer
then I went home to watch TV
but I started feeling restless
it began to get to me
When I get behind the wheel
I can drive it all away
makes no difference how I feel
I can drive it all away
when I get behind the wheel
Well I just turned off of High street
and was headed down to Broadway
but it did not take me long to see that
I had come the wrong way
every one had some one else
and they were walking hand in hand
that’s the wrong kind of scenery
for a poor lonely man
When I get behind the wheel
I can drive it all away
makes no difference how I feel
I can drive it all away
when I get behind the wheel
Just about two hours later
I was wondering if she missed me
when I saw her leave a motel
and she got into a taxi
so I followed as the driver
headed back down towards the station
then my wheels started keeping pace with
my imagination
When I get behind the wheel
I can drive it all away
makes no difference how I feel
I can drive it all away
when I get behind the wheel
Well I read it in the paper
the very next morning
how a hit and run had killed a young
woman without warning
there seemed to be no witnesses
it happened near the station
now she’s going back to Houston
for the family visitation
