There is a special poignancy surrounding Independence Day this year.
The world keeps getting smaller. Every day we read and hear about the mounting protests – demonstrations against governments who repress and control the lives of their people. They may be ordinary people, like you and me, but they’ve learned, they know, they see – that they don’t have to take it any longer. And they won’t. Any one anywhere who dares suppress the rights of a democratic majority will eventually find themselves on the run.
Today, we in America celebrate having been through that.
Yeah, the schemers and the selfish are still out there, grappling for illusionary control. But most of us go to sleep every night with a clear conscious and (how wondrous is it to say this) – we wake up each morning in a land of peace, free.
